Justin Timberlake - FutureSex/LoveSounds (13 Years Anniversary)

On Thursday (September 8), Justin Timberlake’s FutureSex/LoveSounds turns 13. His second solo album since leaving *NSYNC, the album cemented his departure from the world of boy bands, and also marked a new direction for his solo career. Here, we take a look back at the album and all the sexy Timberlake helped bring back with its release. Coming four years after Justin Timberlake released his first solo albumJustified, the followup was a far more experimental and equally risqué album, FutureSex/LoveSounds. The title alone, combining old words into a fresh formation, felt as though Timberlake created some new language, one which challenged the cookie cutter boxes that often represent pop music. With producer/collaborator Timbaland (whose name is all over the album’s credits, from playing instruments to lending vocals), Timberlake stretched the identity he’d long presented the world with, challenging what listeners thought about him. FutureSex/LoveSounds showed Timberlake all grown up and unafraid to own it. 


1- SEXYBACK 

"SexyBack" became Timberlake's first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100, staying seven weeks at the top spot. It also topped several of Billboard magazine's other charts, including the Billboard Pop 100, Hot Dance Airplay, and Hot Digital Songs charts, and entered the top ten on most singles charts. Internationally, it became Timberlake's first single to reach number one in the United Kingdom. In Australia, the track was Timberlake's second number-one single, spending two consecutive weeks at the top. "SexyBack" was certified three-times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and three-times platinum by Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA). "SexyBack" is one of the best selling singles of all time.

The music video was filmed in June 2006; Timberlake decided to work with director Michael Haussman 

2- MY LOVE/ LET ME TALK TO YOU

Timberlake revealed that the song's creating process took time to image and execute. He also stated that "My Love" was less about marriage and a more humble approach to love. The song features synthesizer chords with a slow beat and includes a beatboxing,percussion, and staccato sounds. Timberlake described the track as "a rock-techno ballad"."My Love" was well received by music critics, although some criticized Timberlake for some of the lyrics and sounds.

The track entered the top ten on most charts, topping several of Billboard magazine's component charts, including the Billboard Hot 100, Pop 100, Hot Dance Airplay, and Hot Digital Songs charts. "My Love" also became Timberlake's second consecutive number one single on the Billboard Hot 100. Internationally, the single peaked in the number two position, becoming Timberlake's fourth single to reach number two.

3- WHAT GOES AROUND, COMES AROUND

"What Goes Around ..." is about the love life of a friend of Timberlake, Trace Ayala, and his relationship with Elisha Cuthbert. It also is rumored that the song talks about the relationship the two had in the TV series 24.

The song was retitled "What Goes Around... Comes Around" for its December 19, 2006, release as the third single fromFutureSex/LoveSounds. It became Timberlake's third consecutive number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Internationally the song was also successful, reaching the top ten in countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, Germany, and Australia. The song was later certified two-times platinum in Australia, gold in the United States and gold in New Zealand. The song won Best Male Pop Vocal Performance at the 50th Grammy Awards, where it also received a nomination for Record of the Year.

4- LOVESTONED
(also known as "LoveStoned/I Think She Knows") is a song recorded by American singer-songwriter Justin Timberlake for his second studio album, FutureSex/LoveSounds (2006). It was written and produced by Timberlake, Tim "Timbaland" Mosley and Nate "Danja" Hills . In contrast to the album's theme about sexual innuendos with themes of love, "LoveStoned" contains sexually suggestive lyrics. Musically "LoveStoned" is an upbeat dance song, contrasting with the interlude of "I Think She Knows" which has a more slow, quiet, guitar-driven sound. The song won the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording at the 2008 ceremony.

Recording The Album

In 2005, Timberlake felt inspired to record songs again. Motivated by the "sad state" of pop radio, he decided he needed to experiment with music. Reportedly, it was not until Timberlake turned to producer Timbaland "that he figured out the direction he wanted the record to take". In November 2005, Timberlake visited Timbaland's brand-new Thomas Crown Studios in Virginia Beach, Virginia, United States. Timbaland had previously collaborated with Timberlake, producing four tracks for Justified including "Cry Me a River".

Once in the studio, however, the team had no clear direction for the album as there were no concepts being discussed. Aside from having "Cry Me a River" to draw from, they had no "game plan" and no working title for the new album. Timberlake thought that if he could make a record that would live up to Justified, he "would have". So he asked Timbaland if he could reproduce the likes of "Cry Me a River" by four or six times. 

While in the studio, Timbaland played on the stereo plenty of songs by American singer and musician Prince for them to listen to. Early in their sessions, they reportedly were "fooling around" and "freestyling". One night, Danja was playing a guitar riff and caught the attention of Timberlake, who then started humming to the melody and later sung the lyrics. Timbaland, who was at their side, added drums onto the progressing sound. After an hour, with no lyrics written on paper, Timberlake recorded in the vocal booth a song that would become "What Goes Around... Comes Around". Timberlake, having been teased by Timbaland, said to the latter: "Let's do something we would never do. Let's go far left and just see what happens."

Danja's Stories Behind His Biggest Hits with Timbaland

“We changed the landscape of pop music,” says Danja, the producer extraordinaire, about the incredible run he went on with Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, and Nelly Furtado in 2006. “It changed the music business and what people felt like they needed to succeed with music. It definitely opened the doors for the Skrillexs, David Guettas, and the Afrojacks you see today.”

Though Danja is an accomplished musician in his own right, he’s best known for teaming up with Timbo and helping take the Virginia producers from a hip-hop/R&B hit-maker, to one of the biggest pop craftsmen of the Aughts. With JT’s new album in stores this week, we got on the phone with the producer to talk about which artists are easy to work with, why artists need to be open-minded, and Timbaland’s massive sound library.

"Put You On The Game" (2005)

Danja: "I had a little set up in the house so I started doing some tracks. Tim worked on the bus while I was working in the studio. He came back in the studio off that bus with that track and it blew everybody's head off in the studio. He came in and said, 'I got something.' I added on the choir, the piano, and stuff like that. The beat was definitely done by him, I was just in there but it was a competitive thing. It was always a competitive thing with us in the studio, that carried through the projects we worked on.

"I don't know where Tim finds his [sounds]. He had stuff like that just sitting. You could make five beats just off the sounds he has. His sound collection and the elements he would find are so crazy and so easy that it's a layup for him, he can just put stuff together.

Nelly Furtado "Promiscuous" (2006)

Danja: "I had a beat playing. Tim walked in and said what came to him. he started doing the hook and added some drums. A lot of stuff we would start together, some he would start on his own and some I would start on my own. Then we'd come together and finalize it.

"The funny thing about 'Promiscuous' is he had that record done before we started on Nelly, though he might have had her in mind for it when we made it. I don't remember if she was 100 percent feeling it or not. It was one of those, 'I like it but we're still getting ideas out.' In the end, that was the last song we completed for the album. It ended up being the biggest song on the album."

Justin Timberlake ft. Timbaland "SexyBack" (2006)

Danja: "For 'SexyBack' We were vibing in the studio. The way those sessions went, we jumped right in. The first record we did was 'What Goes Around Comes Around' and then we hopped into another idea. Me and Timbaland were jamming in the studio and Justin was there. We were recording while we were busting riffs, melodies, and beat patterns.

"There was maybe 45 minutes to two hours of us just jamming and they turned into songs like 'SexyBack,' 'Summer Love,' 'Sexy Ladies,' and another track. We went back, fine-tuned them, and make them songs. Everything we did in those sessions ended up on the album except for one song. Everything else, we made it on the spot and ended up on the project. There was no leftover songs from the FutureSex/LoveSounds sessions except for maybe one."

"The Way I Are" (2007)

Danja: "All those records [with Nelly, Justin, and the Timberland solo stuff] came together in that one year. For that song, I had some sounds and then Tim started playing my keyboard messing with sounds. I had a beat going and he did the [melody]. It was weird because now I'm sampling him [instead of the other way around]. I added the drums and everything around it.

"We both are always developing a new style so it evolved through the album-making process. It's always evolving, it's going to change and turn into something different. We strive to keep switching our styles, that's how we maintain eclectic sounds.

50 Cent ft. Justin Timberlake "Ayo Technology" (2007)

Danja: "Me and Tim were working on another album, we were just in the same place at the same time. 50 reached out to Tim and it just happened. In the midst of everything, all the success and the flood of people coming, 50 Cent was just in the mix."

Madonna ft. Justin Timberlake "4 Minutes"

Danja: "We both spoke to Madonna separately. She reached out to me and I was like, 'Of course I would do it with Tim.' She reached out to Tim as well and circled all the communication and we ended up in London working.

"She was there writing, open minded, not a lot of input track wise. Justin was writing and myself and Tim were doing tracks. It was real easy. The biggest stars are the easiest ones to work with. Some of the artist with no hits or are mild success are the biggest pain in the ass, so it's amazing to work with Madonna.

"She'd crack her little jokes in her dark way. She had a dark sense of humor and you got to be witty to keep up. She didn't say anything specific but you wouldn't know if she was cracking a joke. You can't take her serious or be sensitive because she's probably kidding."

"Give It To Me" ft. Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake 

Danja: "Tim had that beat and he was like, 'Yo man, put something on top of this.' I start adding all the different chords and other stuff and he was loving it. Nelly was in there writing, Justin came in way later and he did his verse. If you think about it, it felt like 'Promiscuous.'

"[When we had a series of hits] it was one of those surreal moments. I didn't realize what was going on until later. I'm such a studio rat and not caught up in the industry and the hype. So in the midst of all that, I did something for Britney. I stayed busy."

How He Teamed Up With Timbaland

Danja: "One of the things he used to tell me was, 'All you need is sounds. What you're doing is there but you just need a sound library.' He just started telling me about his massive sound library he had.

"He has sounds, little elements and samples that go back over his whole career. By the time I met him, he was already collecting sounds for probably 15 years. At the time we met, he was like, 'All this is yours once we get in.' I didn't want to sound like Tim.

"Of course, having access to his sound library was tempting. But I wanted to develop my own sound, my own style, and my own musical identity. That's why what we created worked because I still had my own take musically on what I wanted to do along with what he did.

"His sound library is extensive. It's several terabytes of information. Several is probably cutting it short. [Laughs.] I can't even tell you how much he has. [Laughs.] I know that since then it's gotten bigger. So I can't even get into how big it can possibly be now. But it's massive.

"[Having your own sound is the template] for any producer. Dr. Dre, Pharrell, Swizz, they all have a signature sound and style. What I try to do is not give people a signature style. I definitely work on my sonic style, but I like to be versatile. That's why I've worked with a variety of artists from hip-hop to pop to rock. I try not to be identifiable."
