Timbaland Confessed How His Love for Aaliyah Influenced His Marriage

For fans, Timbaland and Aaliyah were like a collaborative match made in heaven; everything they touched turned to gold. From memorable hits like “Hot Like Fire,” and “Four Page Letter” to “One in A Million” and “Are You That Somebody,” Aaliyah and Timbo always managed to bring music to life in the most creative ways. However, many fans may not know there was much more to the story and there’s probably a legitimate reason why it was so easy for Timbaland’s creative juices to flow when working with Aaliyah. For Tim, Aaliyah really was “that somebody.” Years after Aaliyah’s untimely death, the famed producer/rapper revealed how he was madly in love with Aaliyah and how his love for her impacted his life.

She Impacted His Life:

Years after Aaliyah’s untimely death, Timbaland publicly revealed how he was madly in love with Aaliyah and how his love for her impacted his life.
“When I first met Aaliyah… I was in love with her. I said, ‘She (is) just a baby, I’m old’. I said to myself, ‘I’m just gonna be her brother’. Oh man, I was fightin’, I was fightin’ a lot – a big war. But I loved Aaliyah.”

Timbaland Fell Into A Decade-Long Deep Depression After Aaliyah’s Death:

Like most family members, friends, and fans of the singer, Timbaland was absolutely devastated when Aaliyah died. But Tim’s devastation lasted far longer and deeper than most…he recently revealed that he fell into a deep depression following Aaliyah’s deadly plane crash that lasted well over a decade. Years after Aaliyah’s death, Timbaland admits that he’s just getting to a point where he’s coming to terms with the passing of the woman he was extremely in love with until her dying day.

Timbaland Admits To Marrying Wife Because She Looked Like Aaliyah

Timbaland and His ex-Wife, Monique

When Timbaland first laid eyes on music executive, Monique Idlett, she reminded him of Aaliyah. The two met in Jamaica while attending a music event. “When I first saw her, I said, ‘That’s the girl I’m gonna marry’, because she reminded me of Aaliyah… I thought I saw a ghost. I said, ‘Oh my goodness, do you see what I’m seeing? I ain’t crazy!'
However, the relationship has taken a disheartening turn for the worse and it looks like Tim and Monique are headed for divorce – again. Last year, Monique filed for divorce from Tim for the second time and he was hit with serious allegations from his divorce attorneys.
According to the Daily Mail, Timbo reportedly failed to pay $440,000 to his divorce attorneys and now he’s been hit with a lien against his $5 million Miami, FL mansion. But, despite the legal woes, it looks like Timbaland is moving on for good, this time. In fact, Timbo has a new lady in his life and you can only guess who she resemblances. Surprisingly, she too favors Aaliyah…

Check out Timbo’s new lady:

Aaliyah - Are You That Somebody (The Story Behind The Song)

Timbaland's hyperbole is distracting, but his overall point isn't wrong. In more than eight years of making big-time music, he has lapped the field many times over. A few of his stray songs on soundtracks are better than other producers' entire oeuvres -- like the Lil' Kim song ''Money Talks'' from the 1997 soundtrack of the same name. The box-set format, for once, would be entirely appropriate to represent Timbaland.
He got to this point by working fast and furiously. ''Tim will start work for the day, and when he wraps up, at least two songs are mostly done,'' Douglass says. ''Very few songs take more than two days. 'Are You That Somebody?' was written, recorded and mixed in eight hours. Tim came up with the beat, gave it to Static'' -- the nickname for the collaborator Steve Garrett, who sometimes writes lyrics for Tim -- ''and then Aaliyah came in. And then it was done.''
''Are You That Somebody?'' captured the radio in 1998 and never let go. The song is full of huge stops and an uninvited baby, crying. The melody hugs to the bass line and the whole thing lurches about in a way that suggests some unspoken law of pop music is being broken.

It's also a good case study of who does what in this mode of production. Timbaland created what he'd call ''the beat,'' though it is made of more than rhythmic patterns and drum sounds. Timbaland's bass line and keyboards determine the key and the rhythmic inclinations of the tune, while Static's nimble lyrics and melody hew to Timbaland's grid. Aaliyah's soft-edged voice works within this structure to lighten the load and make it pop music.
The words to describe this process are hard to pin down, even when you're sitting in the studio with the creators. Songs are generally called ''records,'' but ''song'' is also used to mean the vocals and lyrics, and people like Static are often called ''songwriters,'' though they're working inside the parameters of the beat. This is how Timbaland described his process to me: ''I'm a one-man show. When I do a song, half the time I do a song, I write it myself or write the hook. Of course, I'm gonna work with Missy, because that's what we do, we tag-team. I use Static and another guy named Walter Millsap. He's a new writer; he wrote a lot of Brandy's stuff.''

Aaliyah Talks Her Work with Timbaland 👼

in A very Rare Interview Aaliyah Talked About Working with Her very Close Friend and Her Producer Timbaland About Her Smash Album "One in A Million"

Aaliyah:It was just like working with a friend, because we have a lot in common. He originally sent in a demo and I didn’t really like the song but I liked the track, so I got in touch with his people and said I’d like to work with him but I wanted the songs to be a certain way. We did two demos and really clicked and it turned into 7 songs.” Those seven songs, and two interludes, would account for more than half of the material on One In A Million’

Aaliyah - One in a Million (20th Anniversary)

Aaliyah’s second album, 1996’s One in a Million It was a game changing album in her too-short career, as well as in the careers of producers Timbaland and Missy Elliott, It was a pivotal moment for Aaliyah. 1994’s Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number put her on the map, but it was well-known that the album was written and produced by her mentor, and lover, R. Kelly. But by 1996, she’d cut ties with Kelly and her label Jive Records. She now had to prove that she was a viable star, on a new record label, without her former mentor.

Off-kilter concussive rhythms, frantic melodies, skittering drums and even an adult contemporary vibe (courtesy of songwriter Diane Warren) intertwine throughoutOne In A Million’s 17 tracks. Unlike Brandy and Monica, two of her musical peers at the time, Aaliyah took a more futuristic approach to R&B music. Nowhere is this more apparent than with the album’s first two singles, “If Your Girl Only Knew” and the title track. The latter saw Aaliyah owning her crown as R&B’s most experimental torchbearer. With production assistance from Missy and Tim, the singer’s tranquil vocals glide over a frantic drum beat as she sings of pleasant vibes with an unnamed lover. (“Your love is a one in a million, it goes on and on and on you give me a really good feelin’ all day long”.)
Adept at the “street but sweet” persona so many R&B girls are still aiming for today, the laid-back approach she displayed on these songs was a pleasant reprieve from the dramatic heartbreak and urgent vocal delivery that dominated the genre during the ’90s. Still, many of the lyrical themes here deal with matters of the heart: teenage love, lust, deceit. This was no surprise, considering Aaliyah was only 17 years old at the time.
Like her idol Janet Jackson, Aaliyah didn’t need to belt out sweeping vocals to get her point across. In that regard, it made her adaptable to the ever changing, genre-defying sounds that would define her discography, and while One In A Million was only the second step in her musical evolution, it proved to be a big leap away from the new jack swing sound pulsing through her first album.
However, she didn’t exclusively utilize her vocals for cooing and soft whispers. On “The One I Gave My Heart To,” the album’s final single, the teenager confirmed what others close to her already knew: she was capable of delivering a vocal performance that would make the era’s dominating divas Whitney Houston and Celine Dion proud.

Aside from its clever combination of electronica and R&B, One In A Million also heralded the arrival of Aaliyah The Music Video Star. Similar to Madonna and Janet, Aaliyah’s brand of masculine appeal laced with feminine sensuality came to life in a deluge of MTV visiuals that played out like sci-fi epics. A quick glance at the music video for “One In A Million” conjures reminders of futuristic films AliensThe Fifth Element and The Matrix. On the flip side, the accompanying clip for fan-favorite single “4 Page Letter” bears resemblances to island survival fiction like Lord Of The Flies and Lost.

One In A Million eventually sold more than a million worldwide — including two million copies stateside — and frequently pops up on ’90s best-of lists. It’s clear the album’s deft combination of electronic and R&B set a precedent for the music of this decade, sitting comfortably on a shelf alongside recent releases from Kelela, FKA twigs and Nao (just pretend people still put physical copies on shelves). The foresight and risk-taking that Aaliyah showcased in 1996 would become fully realized five years later on her eponymous third (and final) album. And that’s why, 15 years after her passing, we still remain curious about how Aaliyah Dana Haughton would’ve continued to push pop music forward.
