Nelly Furtado Interview with Paper Magazine

In a time when output frequency is imperative to maintaining relevance, few artists are making music that stands the test of time. Even when iconic naughties tunes resurface in the club, it's often for the sake of millennial-nostalgia and not because it really holds up in 2017. But show me one track from Nelly Furtado's Loose that wouldn't chart if it was released today and I'll show you the door.

While Furtado has been a pop mainstay since "I'm Like a Bird" in 2004, it was her 2006 Timbaland-produced record that catapulted her to stratospheric success. The album became the soundtrack to the '00s, playing LA's hot spots while Lauren Conrad confronted Brody Jenner on The Hills, dominating MTV with pop'n'b hits like "Promiscuous Girl" and "Say it Right." Whether she was aware or not, Nelly's low-rise jeans and slew of bangers were raising us. Now, after 10 years and a whole lot of living, Nelly Furtado is stripped down and back on top with new album The Ride – and we couldn't be more grateful.

We spoke to the original pop princess about her evolution, musical catharsis and how to avoid turning reptilian.

This is so surreal--I wrote an article listing you as one the artists I would love to see make a 2017 comeback and here you are!

That's hilarious. It's kind of funny because I guess it's been a minute. I was always working but over the past few years I wasn't doing as many projects, just kind of focusing on other things.

Well Loose was such a success when it came out and you had this enormous fame, I can imagine it's daunting to have to present yourself for consideration 10 years on.

Yeah, it's weird. It's been a while since I've done the whole "talk about myself for months on end"-thing. I always laugh that you become like a reptile after a while. Like, long enough on the road.

What's the metaphorical stick that brings you back to life?

Well, lights, camera, action, you know? [Laughs]. Get on top of the table and do your thing. Entertainers learn at a young age that you've got this talent that people like to watch and it can spread a lot of joy. I always came at it from a different perspective, I felt like a songwriter. Like, creating quietly. Don't get me wrong, I do have an extroverted side, I'll go big or go home when it comes to a night out. But there is another side of me that is really uncomfortable around large crowds.

I remember when Loose came out and you were really heavily scrutinized for being this "new, highly-sexualized Nelly." I'm curious how you dealt with that kind of pressure so young. It must have been incredibly grueling. Was that a huge part of growing the reptilian skin?

I mean, there's a side of entertainers too, we're very self-interested. There's a part of it that really fuels your ego, like "Yay, everyone is talking about me," but it's also really juvenile. I've outgrown that need to be the center of attention. The way the industry is designed, let's be honest, it's to stroke your ego. You can't get anymore egotistical then performing your songs on stage and have people cheer for you. The beast feeds itself. The industry feeds itself that type of Kool-Aid.

Oh, 100 percent.

The Loose period too, I mean, I was in my 20s. Half of me was like, "This is amazing! Everyone is talking about me!" And the other half was like, "Maybe you should slow down because this is unsustainable." Now, I slow down, I have to wake up everyday and think, How do I want my life to be? When you start to accept that you're not perfect and perhaps you can make mistakes and you need to conquer some of your fears. I'll always remember writing this album.

This is so weird and niche and you're going to think I'm lying, but when Loose came out, my friends all were each designated a song from the album which was "us." So one friend got "Maneater" and one friend got "Promiscuous Girl" and I was given "All Good Things Come to an End."

They gave you the emo song?! You should ask for a reinstatement!

I honestly wish I got "Do It."

That's what I was going to say! I was literally about to say, "I think you should get 'Do it.'"

Nelly Furtado - Loose (10 Years Anniversary)

After the failure of her second album, Folklore, an adventurous-if-sappy globo-handjob, Furtado's been paired with rhythmic savant Timbaland and his protégé Danja Handz for all but two songs on Loose. And they've already provided international hits with "Promiscuous" and "Maneater", two doses of buzzbeater bass and clomping hi-hats right out of Tim's standard playbook. The songs fit snugly into Tim's oeuvre, but not Furtado's, who's best known for "I'm Like a Bird" and the manic Tim-produced remix of Missy Elliott's "Get Ur Freak On". They sound unlike Furtado not because they're danceable or sexy-- her first two albums were those things-- but because they're about dancing and fucking.

Promiscuous The song's lyrics, which were penned by Furtado and Attitude, feature a conversation between a man and woman who call each other promiscuous. The overtly-sexual song was released as the lead single from the album in North America in early 2006, and as the second single elsewhere in mid-2006 except in Latin America, where the single was released as the third single in late 2006.
The song was well received by music critics, with some critics calling it the highlight of the album. "Promiscuous" was an international success and it had become Furtado's first number-one single in the US. It is the first number one by a Canadian female artist since 1998's "I'm Your Angel" by R. Kelly and Céline Dion on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song also topped the chart in New Zealand and peaked within the top ten on many charts across Europe.
The accompanying music video was directed by Little X, and features scenes of Furtado and Timbaland, in what Furtado describes as a "verbal Ping-Pong game". Cameo appearances are made by Keri HilsonJustin Timberlake
The song won the "Best Pop Single of the Year" at the 2006 Billboard Music Awards and received a nomination for the "Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals" at the 49th Grammy Awards

Maneater The song was written by Furtado,Tim Mosley, Nate "Danja" Hills, and Jim Beanz, and released to mainstream radio in the United States in September 2006. The song's musical style and production were inspired by pop arrangements from the 1980s by bands such as Eurythmics and Hall & Oates. Furtado stated that Hall & Oates' song of the same name was an influence during the writing and recording of the song.
The song received positive reviews from music critics, most of them comparing the song to Madonna and Depeche Mode songs from the 1980s. Outside North America, "Maneater" became one of Furtado's most popular singles, topping the charts in the United Kingdom and peaking within the top ten of the charts across much of Europe and Australia. It became a club hit in North America but was less commercially successful than the lead single "Promiscuous".
The accompanying music video was filmed by American director Anthony Mandler in Los Angeles. The video premiered on Yahoo! Music on 6 September, and was given a "First Look" on MTV's Total Request Live on 8 September. The song was included on thesetlist for Furtado's third tour Get Loose Tour.

Say It Right is a song by Canadian singer Nelly Furtado from her third studio album Loose (2006). Written by Furtado, Tim Mosley and Nate "Danja" Hills, the song was inspired by, as Furtado described it, the "spooky, keyboard-driven pop sound" of the band Eurythmics, specifically their 1983 song titled, "Here Comes the Rain Again". The song released as the album's third singlein North America and Australia (see 2006 in music). The song served as the album's fourth single in certain European and Asian countries. It was released digitally in the United Kingdom in March 2007. It was the album's fifth single in Latin America.
"Say It Right" attained worldwide success, topping the charts in more than seven countries, including the United States, France, New Zealand and many European countries. The accompanying music video for the song, directed by Rankin & Chris, portrays Furtado singing in various costumes and in various locations. The song has been performed on a number of live appearances by Furtado, including her third headlining Get Loose Tour.
It received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 2008 Grammy Awards but lost to Amy Winehouse's "Rehab".
"All Good Things (Come to an End)" iIt was written by Furtado, Tim  MosleyChris Martin, and Nate "Danja" Hills. The song was released as the album's third European single in November 2006. It was released as the fourth single in the United States and Australia. The single featured Chris Martin, frontman of the band Coldplay, harmonizing throughout the song. The original version had him say a few words at the beginning, and sing the chorus behind Furtado. Critically, "All Good Things (Come to an End)" was praised for having diversity in comparison to other songs on Loose, but at the same time criticized for its mellowness. Commercially, the song did well on the music charts, reaching number-one in more than fifteen countries including AustriaCzech RepublicDenmarkGermany and the Netherlands.

"Do It" It was written by Furtado, Tim Mosley and Danja and produced by the former pair and Jim Beanz. The song features a prominent influence of 1980s dance-pop music and sexually suggestive lyrics, in which the song's protagonist asks a lover to satisfy her sexually. Alongside a remix featuring American rapper Missy Elliott, the song was released as the fifth single from the album in North America in July 2007.
The single received mixed reviews from critics, with many criticizing the sexually suggestive lyrics. Commercially, "Do It" reached the top twenty in Canada and was a number-one club hit in the United States, where it became Furtado's lowest peaking single on theBillboard Hot 100; it reached higher positions on charts on mainland Europe.
The music video for "Do It" was directed by Aaron A. (the documentarian on Furtado's Get Loose Tour), and co-directed by Furtado. The filming had taken place on location in Detroit. The video was premiered on MuchMusic on 13 July 2007,and on MTV's Total Request Live on 1 August 2007.
In January 2007, it was revealed that Timbaland plagiarized the synth line in "Do It" from an earlier track by Finnish demoscener Janne Suni and Glenn Rune Gallefoss.

The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, making it Furtado's first album to top the chart with first-week sales of 219,000; it was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and ranked sixty-fourth on the Billboard 2006 year-end chart. Loose exited the US top ten in August 2006 but re-entered it in March 2007, and according to Nielsen SoundScan in October 2007, it had sold two million units. The album ranked thirty-second on the Billboard 2007 year-end chart.

In the United Kingdom, Loose entered the albums chart at number five; in its forty-third week, it reached
number four, and it was certified double platinum for shipments to retailers of more than 600,000 copies. As of July 2007, it had sold roughly 827,000 copies in the UK. The record was certified two times platinum in Australia for more than 140,000 units shipped

Timbaland About Making “Promiscuous” w/ Nelly Furtado

Nelly Furtado describes their relationship during the making of Loose as “volatile.” One of their fights was over the song “Promiscuous.” Furtado thought the lyrics—a flirty back-and-forth between a man and a woman—were dumb, and the listener does get the sense their attraction is not based on intelligence. But neither are most people’s. Mosley won the argument, and “Promiscuous” hit No. 1 in the summer of 2006 and became an anthem for hookup culture. But although they toured together to promote it,

Nelly Furtado was initially hesitant about recording this sexually charged duet. “I told her, ‘You can’t be that same Nelly Furtado laying on the grass playing with birds🕊,'” Timbaland says. “She was like, ‘Oh no, Tim, I’m not doing that!😣’

I told her, ‘I’m not saying exploit yourself, I’m saying showcase yourself.'” The track was one of the last songs to be completed for Furtado’s Loose LP. She and Timbaland finished it right before executives from Furtado’s label arrived to hear how the material was shaping up. “The moment of truth was playing it back with everyone in the room,” Timbaland says.

The label loved it — and chose it as the record’s first U.S. single.

Timbaland Confirms No full Version of 'YONCÉ'

In an interview with Entertainment WeeklyTimbaland revealed secrets about his work as a producer and featured stories involving Beyoncé.

According to him, the creative process of the album visual "BEYONCÉ", released in 2013, was "one of the biggest events in music that has never been televised." To produce the disk, Beyoncé joined all of the contributors in a sort of boot camp.

Timbaland, who has worked with artists such as Jay Z and Justin Timberlake to the making of the work of the singer, said that the process was peaceful and ôrganico. "Yoncé, the intro of Partition, came about when Timberlake began to pound in a bucket", he said.

To the unhappiness of the fans, the producer also confirms that there is not a version 'full' of the song, unlike that indicate the rumors.

Beyoncé does not sing for the producers, according to him. "She enters the room to her with a sound engineer and closes the door".
