Danja's Stories Behind His Biggest Hits with Timbaland

“We changed the landscape of pop music,” says Danja, the producer extraordinaire, about the incredible run he went on with TimbalandJustin Timberlake, and Nelly Furtado in 2006. “It changed the music business and what people felt like they needed to succeed with music. It definitely opened the doors for the Skrillexs, David Guettas, and the Afrojacks you see today.”
Though Danja is an accomplished musician in his own right, he’s best known for teaming up with Timbo and helping take the Virginia producers from a hip-hop/R&B hit-maker, to one of the biggest pop craftsmen of the Aughts. With JT’s new album in stores this week, we got on the phone with the producer to talk about which artists are easy to work with, why artists need to be open-minded, and Timbaland’s massive sound library.

"Put You On The Game" (2005)

Danja: "I had a little set up in the house so I started doing some tracks. Tim worked on the bus while I was working in the studio. He came back in the studio off that bus with that track and it blew everybody's head off in the studio. He came in and said, 'I got something.' I added on the choir, the piano, and stuff like that. The beat was definitely done by him, I was just in there but it was a competitive thing. It was always a competitive thing with us in the studio, that carried through the projects we worked on.
"I don't know where Tim finds his [sounds]. He had stuff like that just sitting. You could make five beats just off the sounds he has. His sound collection and the elements he would find are so crazy and so easy that it's a layup for him, he can just put stuff together.

Nelly Furtado "Promiscuous" (2006)

Danja: "I had a beat playing. Tim walked in and said what came to him. he started doing the hook and added some drums. A lot of stuff we would start together, some he would start on his own and some I would start on my own. Then we'd come together and finalize it.
"The funny thing about 'Promiscuous' is he had that record done before we started on Nelly, though he might have had her in mind for it when we made it. I don't remember if she was 100 percent feeling it or not. It was one of those, 'I like it but we're still getting ideas out.' In the end, that was the last song we completed for the album. It ended up being the biggest song on the album."

Justin Timberlake ft. Timbaland "SexyBack" (2006)

Danja"For 'SexyBack' We were vibing in the studio. The way those sessions went, we jumped right in. The first record we did was 'What Goes Around Comes Around' and then we hopped into another idea. Me and Timbaland were jamming in the studio and Justin was there. We were recording while we were busting riffs, melodies, and beat patterns.
"There was maybe 45 minutes to two hours of us just jamming and they turned into songs like 'SexyBack,' 'Summer Love,' 'Sexy Ladies,' and another track. We went back, fine-tuned them, and make them songs. Everything we did in those sessions ended up on the album except for one song. Everything else, we made it on the spot and ended up on the project. There was no leftover songs from the FutureSex/LoveSounds sessions except for maybe one."

"The Way I Are" (2007)

Danja: "All those records [with Nelly, Justin, and the Timberland solo stuff] came together in that one year. For that song, I had some sounds and then Tim started playing my keyboard messing with sounds. I had a beat going and he did the [melody]. It was weird because now I'm sampling him [instead of the other way around]. I added the drums and everything around it.
"We both are always developing a new style so it evolved through the album-making process. It's always evolving, it's going to change and turn into something different. We strive to keep switching our styles, that's how we maintain eclectic sounds.

Timbaland feat. Nelly Furtado & Justin Timberlake - Give It to Me (10th Anniversary)

released as the first single from his second studio album Shock Value (2007). The song features vocals by Canadian singer and songwriter Nelly Furtado and American singer Justin Timberlake. All three artists co-wrote the song together with American rapper Attitude and American producer Danja, who produced the song with Timbaland. Mosley Music Group, in association with Blackground Records and Interscope Records, serviced the song to contemporary hit and rhythmic radios in the United States on 4 February 2007 and later to urban radios on 10 March 2007. "Give It to Me" is an electro song that embodies the sensibilities of club music. The song features the protagonists addressing their critics about their successes in the music industry.

The song has been noted for its notable diatribe in Timbaland's verse against American producer Scott Storch, who has worked with the producer in the past. It received positive reviews from music critics, many praising it for its club-oriented sound, Timbaland's production and the lyrics. The song experienced successful commercial outcomes in the United States as well as internationally. "Give It to Me" reached the top position on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming his first and only number one solo single in the United States (second overall after "Promiscuous").

The song was released to the internet in November 2006 in a demo version and it was speculated as a possible single from Timbaland's new studio album. In late January 2007, it was confirmed as the first single from Timbaland's new album, which was confirmed to be released in March. Following the release of the single, a rivalry between Timbaland and record producer Scott Storch began to intensify. In the lyrics, Timbaland anonymously backlashes Storch: "I'm a real producer and you['re] just the piano man". In an interview, Timbaland confirmed that he was talking about Storch. The dispute partly stemmed from controversy regarding writing credits for Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me a River" (2003). Following the reported diss, Storch culminated a response song of his own called "Built Like That", where he addresses Timbaland for stealing credit from Danja and claims to be the true producer of "Cry Me a River".

On 26 February 2007, the music video for "Give It to Me" was premiered on MTV's TRL. It shows Timbaland, Furtado, and Timberlake performing the song at the 2007 Grammy Awards pre-show concert, and is intercut with footage from a studio recording session and from inside Timbaland's tour bus. The clip also shows Furtado singing on a balcony. The video was directed by Paul "Coy" Allen and Timbaland and appeared at number ninety-eight on BET's Notarized: Top 100 Videos of 2007 countdown.

Timbaland - Shock Value (10th Anniversary)

On This Day February 4th 2007 Timbaland Released His 2nd Solo Album "Shock Value
It is Timbaland's first release on his own imprint, the Interscope Records-distributed Mosley Music GroupShock Value features a long list of guest artists, among them Fall Out BoyJustin TimberlakeThe HivesKeri HilsonNelly FurtadoMissy Elliott50 CentTony YayoDr. DreOneRepublicElton JohnMagoo and Nicole Scherzinger.

There was no one else bigger in the hip-hop production field than Timbaland in the early half of the new millennium. , but when it came to making records of his own, there are few words that can be written about Timbaland “The Artist.” his debut LP, 1998’s Tim’s Bio: Life from Da Bassment, a soundtrack from a little-known B-movie film, was a surprising album that had many critics (like your’s truly) turning their heads in amazement of what Timbaland “The Artist” could do if he made his own music.

Shock Value his second solo LP, in 2007, and all of that “shock and awe” that was experienced by the music world quickly went away, at the time, In some respects, the critics who had conflicting feelings about Shock Value were correct that the LP had some moments “really, Timbaland?” moments. But on the other hand, when Timbaland was on his game, he was really on his game.

Release
Take This Track for instance, which featured the newly minted Prince of R&B in Justin Timberlake. Anyone who listened to that track back in the day certainly was irritating motorist on the highway. It was a bass fan’s manifesto, and, to this very day, “Release” can rock the stereo speakers in a way that few singles can in this day and age.

The Way I Are
Another highlight of Shock Value was “The Way I Are,” which got Keri Hilson and D.O.E. together for an electronic affair that would influence the sound of R&B for years to come.

Give it To Me
There were other standouts on Shock Value, like the Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake collab of “Give it To Me” (which became Timbaland’s first #1 hit)

Apologize
And to the scenic “Apologize,” which featured One Republic,
that just missed out on the top spot of the Hot 100.

Scream
Timbaland gets his sexy groove on with winners "Scream" featuring the Two R&B Divas Nicole Scherzinger and His New Artist Keri Hilson.

Bounce
a dark, bass-heavy track that finds Timberlake proposing a mnage a trios, Dr. Dre rapping about panty anthems, and Missy Elliott screaming "Hold up. Hell no. Like Britney Spears, I wear no drawers." Most of the successful tracks are of the R&B/dance variety

Throw It On Me

The track Throw It On Me It’s a high energy rock blitzkrieg that will have you sweating if they ever play it at the club.

Oh Timbaland
starts the party, kicking off with ramshackle piano notes and handclaps before transforming into an introductory rap from our main man. It sets the scene adequately for Timbaland's star pupils

One And Only
Fall Out Boy add balls to 'One And Only', a fast-moving, soaring track which sees singer Patrick Stump's impressive vocals make way for a fierce rap by Timbaland.

Singles
  • "Give It to Me" It peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100
  • "The Way I Are" It peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at #1 on the UK
  • "Apologize" it peaked #3 on the UK Singles Chart. On the Billboard Hot 100
  • "Scream" it peaked at #12 on the UK Singles Chart.

Shock Value was certified 3x Platinum with sales of 210,000+ copies. It reached the top of the album chart on the week beginning 12/31/2007.
